Summer Harvests

Green greetings to you all and a warm welcome to autumn.

Have you spied the first red leaves of fall yet? Those red sparks tell us it is time to get serious about harvesting.

In the sacred calendars of the peoples of the northern hemisphere, August is harvest month. Time to make hay, reap and winnow grain, gather grapes, bring in the corn, deal with the beans, enjoy an abundance of tomatoes and cooking greens, and look for the last of the lamb's quarter and amaranth greens and the first of their seeds. Now is the time to harvest the last of the hypericum and motherwort, and to cut flowing catnip, lemon balm, mint, and lavender for vinegars or honeys.  There's so much to do, so many remedies to make and lay aside for the winter. Time to get serious about harvesting.

And that is just what we did during  the tenth annual Green Goddess Apprentice Week: A delightful, empowering, delicious, movement-filled, colorful, meaningful, belly-laughing week of sisterhood, plants, fabulous food, and the Goddess in her many guises. Time to be the Goddess.

This year the Green Goddesses – the Cardinal Clan – picked wild greens for salad twice every day. Five-finger ivy, giant chickweed, shiso, and wild oregano were their favorites. I wish I had taken a picture of their stunning salads. They decorated them with mandalas made of chicory blossoms, Queen Anne's lace, red and white clover, bedstraw flowers, wild oregano flowers, and even some goldenrod. Time to get serious about harvesting.

Speaking of mandalas, each green goddess created a personal power shield during her stay. Learn more here.

The Green Goddesses made medicinal herbal vinegars with vitex flowers, red shiso (what a color!), lemon balm, catnip, and self heal.  And they enjoyed vinegars made by previous apprentices, including white pine needles, Portobello stalks, garlic mustard roots, green onions, and garlic scapes. Time to get serious about harvesting.

Herbal pestos, herbal honeys, tinctures, and oils were also part of our time together, as well as yoga, swimming in the river, dream workings, heart-beat drumming, consultations, moon lodge, a Goddess Pageant, and a high magic ritual to initiate green witches. Time to be the Goddess

Every day found us taking long walks in the forest and fields surrounding my home in the Catskill Mountains, learning about plant families. (We focused on the mint, cabbage, hibiscus, and buckwheat families.)

Those who came early got a surprise boat ride on the Hudson River Sunday and a bonus tai chi class Monday morning.

Our time together was rich and rewarding on so many levels. Plan now to join us next year – in person, or in dream time. We welcome you to our circle.

Green blessings are everywhere. Time to get serious about harvesting. Time to be the Goddess. Now.

Personal Power Shields

There is a Sisterhood of the Shields. The Green Goddesses are brought into the circle of this Sisterhood with the aid of all three of their teachers during the Green Goddess Week.
White Feather, my wolf clan sister of the Seneca Nation, guides our steps along the Rainbow Path of Peace, helping each woman find her entering color, her protection color, and the other colors to be used in her shield. Starting our days with White Feather and the Seven Directions Movement Meditation brings us emotional and physical strength to draw on for the creation of our shields.

Susun introduces body dynamics for building personal power through stance, sight, breath, and grounding. She helps the Goddesses make subtle changes to their posture to magnify the flow and storage of their personal energy. Susun helps each Green Goddess rewrite her victim story to create a saga of personal strength and choice.

Yvette Lewis brings it all together into the actual creation of the shield. Each Green Goddess receives instruction on mandalas and their spiritual uses, teachings and practice with color-mixing and the psychic resonances of color, and hands-on help with the emotional aspects of creating a power shield. All supplies, including a stretched canvas, are provided, so the Goddesses are free to focus on creation.

And here they are! Each unique, like the women who made our circle. Each vibrating with energy that will help her not just remember, but act on, the revelations and gifts she discovered during her week as a Green Goddess Apprentice.

Together, we rewove the healing cloak of the Ancients, and remembered that herbal medicine is people's medicine. We opened our minds, opened our hearts, and opened our bellies and let the green love pour in. Bliss.
