Art by Jyothi C. Sistla

Jyothi C Sistla Biography:
According to Albert Einstein," there is a lot in common between art and science, and the most outstanding scientists are artists as well."
I am a passionate amateur traditional painting artist and professional scientist. I like to capture my memories of growing up in India, listening to
mythological stories through my traditional painting.
I belong to the heritage city Mysore in Southern India. As a child, I became fascinated with watching the Mysore style painting at King's palace and mural paintings on temple walls. Eventually, this led me to learn traditional paintings like Mysore painting, Tanjore painting, and Kerala mural painting from renowned artists across India, apart from doing a Ph.D. in biochemistry.
Thematically, these painting share Hindu mythological characters and tales and their serene beauty make them auspicious and precious, and thus they blend well with any wall decor.
All forms of painting have a history that dates back to about 1300-1600 AD. Mysore Painting is a form of classical South Indian painting, which evolved in the Mysore city. Typically, the paintings are characterized by delicate lines, intricate gesso, and the discreet use of bright vegetable colors and lustrous thin gold leaf.
Tanjore paintings got their name from a city in South India, where this painting style developed and thrived. Thanjavur painting is traditionally executed on a wooden plank, with vivid colors, shinning 24-carat gold foils laid over extensive gesso work along with the rare precious and semi-precious gems.
The mural paintings are usually found on the exterior walls of the temples, and it was a way to experience the deity outside the sanctum. The color palette is limited, consists of mainly five colors –red, yellow, green, black, and white, rarely Blue mixed with either green/yellow.
The above artforms are counted among the most iconic artworks, and sadly only a few artists are available to preserve this fragile traditional painting. My small effort is to keep and revive these ancient painting techniques, introduce the heritage to the world, and pass it on to
future generations.
Jyothi C Sistla is an artist based in Richmond, VA. She practices authentic traditional painting artforms of southern India inspired by Hindu mythology characters.
